Song
Xie, instructor of violin and viola, is a native of China, where
he studied at the GuangXi Institute of the Arts and the Shanghai
Conservatory of Music. There he distinguished himself as first violinist
of the Institute Quartet, and as concertmaster of the Institute
Orchestra. Mr. Song was a prizewinner in the National Violin Competition
in China in 1984. He came to the United States and earned his masters
degree in violin performance from Louisiana State University, where
he won the LSU Concerto Competition in both 1991 and 1993.
He has been a featured soloist with
the GuangXi Institute Orchestra and the GuangXi Symphony Orchestra in China, the LSU Symphony Orchestra
in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and
the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra in Jackson, MS. Song is an active violinist at summer
festivals. He has served as assistant concertmaster in the Laric
Mountain Festival Orchestra in Pittsburgh, as principal second violinist
and a violin faculty member at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin
Lakes, MI, and has been concertmaster of the Delta Symphony Orchestra
in Greenville, MS.
Mr. Song's performances as soloist
with the LSU Symphony Orchestra brought praise from the Morning
Advocate of Baton Rouge, mentioning his "exuberant performance"
of the Carmen Fantasy and his "technically impressive"
rendition of the Wieniawski First
Concerto. According to the Northside Sun in Jackson, his recent
performance of the Mozart Violin Concerto No.1 with the Mississippi
Chamber Orchestra was noteworthy for its "energy and remarkable
accuracy" as well as its "beautiful tenderness and sensitivity."
Currently he
is principal second violin in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, and he also serves as the current president of ASTA (American String Teacher Association) in the Mississippi Chapter.
His main violin teachers include Professor
Shi-Xiang Zhang, Sally O'Reilly, and Camilla Wicks.
