Bob Tyler Becomes Head Football Coach

At a press conference held on campus February 3, Millsaps announced that Bob Tyler would lead the Millsaps Majors into their centennial season. After a thorough interview process with five quality candidates, Tyler was chosen the eighteenth coach since the inception of the Millsaps football program in 1900.

“Bob Tyler’s experience, enthusiasm, and passion for football will set an appropriate example for our student-athletes,” said President George Harmon. “Bob is an excellent football tactician and a true student of the game. I am confident Bob will bring Millsaps football back to national prominence in a short period of time. Additionally, I have found Bob to share the same philosophies as Millsaps and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with respect to instilling character and understanding the priority of academics in building student-athlete leaders. He clearly understands and supports the fact that at Millsaps all of our athletes are students first – and athletes second.”

Calling Tyler “a quality person with a strong knowledge of football,” Athletic Director Ron Jurney said that an added bonus is that Tyler is well known and respected throughout the state of Mississippi.

Tyler brings to the football program his personal goal for the Majors – working toward a national championship. He intends to continue to build the team by capitalizing on the foundation laid by his predecessors. Tyler’s coaching staff will focus on teaching technique. He firmly believes that technique is the answer to successful football because it enables players to compete in any situation.

A former head coach at Mississippi State University in the 1970s, Tyler’s coaching career spans three decades in which time he has amassed an impressive record. He led teams to playoffs in the Sugar Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, the Gator Bowl, the Sun Bowl, and the Orange Bowl prior to his recent hiatus from coaching. Bob Tyler and his wife Dale have three sons – Breck, Cam, and Drew. certainly adds considerable depth to the library’s resources.”
