McElvaine Featured in
Life’s Book on 20th Century

Robert S. McElvaine, Professor of History, is featured in Life’s latest book, Our Century in Pictures. The book documents the last 100 years through familiar images that have become part of our national consciousness. Dr. McElvaine is one of only nine historians chosen by Life to provide introductory essays on key periods of the twentieth century. His essay about the Depression era is included with others by such noted historians as Paul Fussell, Garry Wills, and David Kennedy.

“The book is really a photo album of America and the world in the twentieth century, and these images bring the past to life in remarkable ways,” says Dr. McElvaine. “The photos from the thirties include black-and-white images of Depression victims that have shaped our view of the decade.”

Dr. McElvaine, who serves as the Elizabeth Chisholm Professor of Arts and Letters at Millsaps, has also written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal, in addition to appearing on the Today Show, The History Channel, and many other television and radio programs.

“Robert McElvaine is a well-recognized authority on American history, as well as being an inspiring professor,” says Richard Smith, Vice President and Dean of the College. “Millsaps is fortunate to have such a distinguished scholar and teacher on its faculty.”

McElvaine’s latest book, The Depression and the New Deal: A History in Documents, is now in bookstores. The book examines the Depression era through letters, songs, poems, works of art, movie stills, speeches, and other documents. It is McElvaine’s sixth book, and is his third on the Depression era, a period on which he is recognized as one of the nation’s leading historians.
