Ray
Receives Outstanding Young Faculty Award Darby Ray, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, is the first recipient of the Outstanding Young Faculty Award. She will receive a one-semester release from teaching and $1000 to support her scholarly activities. The Award seeks to recognize promising, untenured faculty in their third, fourth, or fifth year at Millsaps and to give them release time to develop their teaching, scholarship, or artistic accomplishments. A winner must show evidence of noteworthy teaching, exceptional promise for scholarly or artistic accomplishments, and serious attention to the duties of a faculty member. Dr. Ray was one of 10 faculty nominated for the award. Com- petition for the award was keen, but after a careful and thorough review, the selection committee recommended Dr. Ray for the Award. Dr. Ray earned her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt in 1996, the same year that she came to Millsaps after teaching for two years at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in upstate New York. Since coming to Millsaps, Dr. Ray has shown herself to be an outstanding teacher who cares deeply for her students but also demands much from them, says Richard Smith, Vice President and Dean of the College. She also has been thoroughly involved in the life of College and has served on several important committees, including the Information Technology Task Force which developed the plans that led to the substantial upgrade in computing on campus over the last year and half. In addition to her teaching and service to the College, Dr. Ray has shown great promise as a scholar. In 1998, she published her first book, Deceiving the Devil: Atonement, Abuse, and Ransom, and she is hard at work on her second book, tentatively titled Christic Imagination: An Ethic of Incarnation and Ingenuity. Dr. Ray plans to use her release time from teaching to concentrate on writing and hopes to complete the majority of manuscript for her second book. PREVIOUS PAGE | PAGE 1 OF 1 | NEXT PAGE |
