Millsaps Grants Emeritus Status to Charles Sallis, Harrylyn Sallis, Jim Parks, and George Harmon

Dr. William Charles Sallis, Dr. Harrylyn G. Sallis, Jim F. Parks, and Dr. George M. Harmon were each presented with Emeritus status at Commencement.

Dr. Charles Sallis has taught
at Millsaps since 1968. A native Mississippian, he was chosen Millsaps’ Distinguished Professor in 1973. He has held two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships and served as a tutor in the British Studies Programme at Oxford University for five summer sessions. He is the co-author of Mississippi: Conflict and Change, which won the Southern Regional Council’s Lillian Smith Award as the outstanding work in Southern history for 1975. He has served as director of the Heritage Program and chair of the history department.

He has spoken on Southern history and the humanities across the state of Mississippi for more than 30 years, tirelessly serving communities, schools, libraries, and higher education.

Both a proponent and a practitioner of lifelong learning, Dean of Adult Learning Harrylyn G. Sallis became the founding director of the Millsaps Adult Degree Program in 1981. The Liberal Studies Seminar, which originated with the Adult Degree Program, has since become a model for the College and is now required of all students. Dean Sallis was founding director of the Leadership Seminar in the Humanities and the Master of Liberal Studies degree program. She taught music courses at Millsaps for many years.

She has been a consultant to the Mississippi Humanities Council, the SACS Team, and the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. She has also served as president of the Mississippians for Educational Broadcasting and as a charter member of the Parents for Public Schools.

Jim F. Parks served as College Librarian for 30 years, during which time he oversaw the transformation of the library into a
vital campus resource with a wide range of traditional and electronic services. Parks was President of the Faculty Council and chair-person of the Faculty Affairs Committee and of the Library Planning Committee.

He has been President of the Mississippi Library Association and is now the Parliamentarian. He was the Mississippi Chapter councilor to the American Library Association and served on 30 Southern Association accreditation teams between 1974 and 1989. He has edited library publications, written book reviews, and taught library science courses.

Dr. George M. Harmon became President of Millsaps in 1978 and will serve as President Emeritus and Senior Counsel for Special Projects after July 1, 2000. (See page 14 for more details about his many achievements).
