Millsaps Recognized for
Cable System Solution

The Association for Telecommuni- cations Professionals in Higher Education featured Millsaps in the fall 1998 ACUTA Journal. The journal recognized Millsaps for its 1996 decision to enter into a six-year contract with WirelessOne that included designing, installing, operating, and maintaining a campus cable system valued at $350,000 with no cost to the College. Now students no longer have to select cable providers on their own, and physical plant director Richard Gell does not have to oversee numerous cable companies running wire through the dorms. With the new system, the number of subscribers mushroomed from 10% of campus residents to 60-70% because of the increased convenience and service. As part of the contract, Millsaps also negotiated 80 free connections to administrative and academic areas of campus and the creation of the "Millsaps Channel," Channel 33, which carries videotaped programming, text information display, and live broadcasts to keep the campus community apprised of news and events.
The cable system is only one of many services that the College has added over the past several years to assure that campus life meets and even exceeds the advantages of off-campus housing. For example, all residence hall rooms have hard-wired internet access at no cost to students. With 75% of the student body living on campus, Millsaps’ decision to offer  the latest technology has paid off.
