Millsaps College will host the 2009 Southern Literary Festival and will join with the Eudora Welty Foundation, the Eudora Welty Society, New Stage Theatre, the Mississippi Museum of Art, and the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in commemorating the hundredth anniversary of Welty’s birth.
Honoring Welty at a Southern Literary Festival is especially appropriate since she was on the program of seven different Southern Literary Festivals, more than any other writer in the organization’s seventy-two year history.
At this year’s festival Elizabeth Spencer, Alfred Uhry, Richard Ford, Ann Patchett, and James Kimbrell, three generations of distinguished writers who admire Welty’s achievement and who were inspired by her example, will give readings from their own work and serve on panels about Welty and about the craft of writing. See more about the activities and programs available.
Millsaps is one of the founding members of the Southern Literary Festival and has hosted or co-hosted five previous festivals.
