28 May 2004 Ben Witt's at home and abroad
Posted by: Ben Witt
wittba123@comcast.net

I'm working on the GIS elements of a project in the Republic of Georgia again this summer.  The site is known as Dmanisi and is well known for being the oldest known site outside of Africa at 1.87 million years old. Also, I am working on my Master's thesis covering a detailed spatial analysis of the Aubrey Clovis site in Denton County, Texas.  This is also one of the earliest Clovis sites in North America, dated to 11,500 years old.

Exciting stuff.
Hope you're doing well.

28 May 2004 An Update from Tim Parsons (bound for Hungary!)
Posted by: Tim Parsons
kharmajavah@hotmail.com

I'm working as the staff archaeologist and historian for the Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship. In recent months, I've been taking care of my recently broken and reconstructed front teeth, visiting Canada , and eating cheap yet wholesome food. I'm also writing songs and playing music at various places in the Frederick , MD , Washington , D.C. , and occasionally Baltimore , MD vicinity. Hopefully I'll be recording a pseudo-album within the next few weeks, as long as I can hole up in my bedroom for two or so days consecutively to get it done. Here's to the
D-I-Y ethic...

I also claim 1/4 ownership of a dog named Scout, who loves belly rubs and chasing squirrels. I'll be visiting Hungary with the Koros Regional Archaeological Project again this summer, so if you want post-cards, send me your address post haste.

Cheers.

9 November 03 An Update from Shane Townsend (in Bolivia with the Peace Corps!)
Posted by: Shane Townsend
jshane19@hotmail.com

I´ve spent the last 12 weeks living with a host family in a pueblito my the name of Marquina. It´s at the foot of the mountains about 15 km outside of Cochamba. During the past 12 weeks our schedule has been full of training sessions that dealt with: language (5 hours per day), culture, safety/security, capacity building and community development  and  specific technical areas (for me tourism, but we also have volunteers working in ag business and micro-enterprise development).

We´ve also been working within the host communities in capacity building. etc. as part of our training.

We swear in as volunteers next week and will then move to our assigned sites. My site is in San Ignacio de Velasco in the frontera near Brazil. The site is actually quite nice as it´s on the Jesuit Mission Circuit and near Parque Noel Kemp (the national park that inspired the novel ¨Lost World.¨) I´ll be working in a variety of projects, but as they are not fully predetermined I cannot give you a completely accurate listing. During my first 3 months I´ll be performing needs assessments, etc and all subsequent projects will of course be based on the findings of my needs assessments. My primary project is to work in tourism development. I do know that I will be working with the Alcaldias office, the tourism office and an international NGO in interpreting and implementing a UNESCO plan that was developed a few years back. I will also be working with the local high school's ecology club to teach concepts related to sustainabiility, tourism, working as a tour guide, etc. There is a great deal of opportunity, so its just a matter of choosing the projects wherein I see the greatest opportunity and in which I have sincere interest.

8 November 03 From the desert to the city: An update from Jenny Irons
Posted by: Jenny Irons
jirons@hamilton.edu

After completing my PhD in May 2003 at the University of Arizona, I packed up my desert life and my dog, Lucy, and moved to central New York to work at Hamilton College. So far, I love my job--the students, the colleagues, and the classes.

I'm team-teaching a class (kind of works like Heritage) called American Society, and I'm
also teaching a writing-intensive Sociology of Sexuality course. My dissertation, which I'm currently revising, focuses on the case of the
Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission as a study of how political elites reconstitute power and legitimacy when faced with disruption. In other words, the dissertation looks at how
the Commission shifted from the stalwart defense of segregation to the reluctant promotion of moderation in order to maintain legitimate power for white elites. I'm also adjusting to cold, dreary weather, as fall is here and winter is approaching!

6 October 03 Recent academic appointment of our alumnae:
Posted by: Ming Tsui

Jenny Irons, class of 1996, assistant professor of sociology at Hamilton College

Carla Shirley, class of 1995, assistant professor of sociology at Rhodes College

Robyn Ryle, class of 1996, assistant professor of sociology at Birmingham-Southern College

Lea Pickard, class of 1995, assistant professor of anthropology at Luther College

27 May 03 Alum Jeff Mitchell (c/o '01) resigns Sports Information post; heads to Ole Miss Law School
Posted by: Ron Jurney,
Millsaps Athletic Director
"Our Sports Information Director,Jeff Mitchell, has resigned (effective this Friday May 23rd ) so that he might attend the Ole Miss Law School. While he had informed us that this was his goal two years ago, we have a hard time accepting the fact the he won’t be with us any longer.

Jeff first began working in our Sports Information Department as a student in 1996.He was hired as our SID in the spring of 2000.Since that time we have seen our visibility within the community and state improve vastly as a result of Jeff’s rapport with the media. We have also had a record number of our student-athletes receive player of the week and post season honors in the last two years. We will miss Jeff’s high degree of professionalism and his passion for Millsaps and it’s athletic program."
