The
Millsaps Players are the production arm of the theatre program. The Players normally
produce three full-length plays each year at the Christian Center's fully equipped
Marion L. Smith Auditorium. They also present several one-act plays directed by
senior theatre majors. Casting for all plays is by audition and is open to all
students. Participation in Players productions, either onstage or backstage, earns
credit toward membership in Alpha Psi Omega, the national honorary dramatics society.
Academic credit is also available.

An Evening of Senior Directing Projects:
Friday - Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. - Christian Center Auditorium
The Bacchae of Euripides; translated by Dr. Paul Woodruff; directed by Cody Stockstill
Written at the close of Euripides’ life, The Bacchae is the great Greek dramatist’s final masterpiece, and is as pertinent to our own times as it was to the ancient Greeks. At the center of the play is the confrontation between human arrogance and the primal forces of nature, and between logic and irrationality. Its shattering climax forces us to ponder the psychology of mass violence, the virtues of moderation over pure reason, and our ideas of the divine. Download a flyer in PDF format.
Hold Me! by Jules Feiffer; directed by Kelly Shows
A long-run Off-Broadway success, this incisive and joyously funny revue by America’s noted humorist and social satirist probes hilariously into the doubtful joys and small terrors of urban living. “...chemically pure, perfectly proportioned, out of its mind and devastatingly funny.” – NY Times Download a flyer in PDF format.

Players Production I: Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind; director Jeannie-Marie Brown
Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. - Christian Center Auditorium
“Deeply tragic scenes mingle with moments of hilarious farce” “...a seminal work in the history of modern theater.”
In 1891 playwright Frank Wedekind wrote a vibrant, fantastical, albeit gruesome depiction of 19th century adolescence. Originally labeled as “pure pornography” Spring Awakening still challenges our ability to compassionately understand the torrent of emotions experienced throughout puberty. Today, the musical adaptation is thrilling Broadway audiences, but since 1891 censors have closed numerous productions of the original text. Our production explores the beauty, joy, desperation, and violent nature of self-discovery during adolescence. Travel with us into the world of 14-year-old Wendla, Moritz, and Melchior to experience the power of Wedekind’s ability to entertain, enlighten, challenge, and provoke.

Players Production: Rumors by Neil Simon, guest director Denise Halbach
Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm - Christian Center Auditorium
America’s funniest playwright tries his hand at what Time hailed as “old-fashioned, door-slamming crockery-smashing farce” – with hilarious results. A deputy mayor of New York and his wife have invited four couples to their fancy suburban home to celebrate their tenth anniversary. When the first couple arrives, they find the hostess gone and the host lying upstairs with a superficial bullet wound. They try to hide what they fear is a scandal from the second couple, who tries to hide it from the third, and so on, until all the guests are caught in a mad melee of rumor and misunderstanding.

Players Production: The Music Man; book, music & lyrics by Meredith Willson; director Jeannie-Marie Brown
Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm - Christian Center Auditorium
An affectionate paean to Smalltown, USA of a bygone era, Meredith Willson’s musical follows the fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize – this despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marion the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. By turns wickedly funny, warmly romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best.
