The Music Department at Millsaps College offers rigorous musical training programs within a broad liberal arts experience. We provide instruction to students of all ability levels through private lessons, ensemble performance, diverse course topics, and professional development opportunities. Our faculty encourage student musicians to learn not only how to master their craft, but also continually ask the question “Why?,” coupling practical knowledge and skill with curiosity and critical investigation. In keeping with the Millsaps vision and mission statements, the music faculty encourages students to participate in community engagement and outreach, and to explore ways to bring their work to the public.

With participation from roughly one-quarter of our campus population, the Department of Music at Millsaps constitutes a dynamic creative environment that unites tradition with innovation. This is reflected in the variety of course offerings and performance ensembles, which range from choirs and chamber ensembles to instrumental jazz and experimental music.

You can take advantage of our department at all levels of involvement, from studying an instrument or participating in the Millsaps Singers or Chamber Singers for personal fulfillment, to preparing solo recitals as a concentrator earning a Performance Certificate.

Private instrumental music instruction is available for students at all levels of study, from beginner to advanced professional. Performance instruction is with members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and top professional musicians in the Jackson area. Lessons are available for piano, organ, voice, guitar, violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

The music department is closely aligned with the College’s award-winning study-abroad program and offers international study opportunities, to London, Prague & Vienna, and Taiwan. Millsaps’ location in the capital city, midway between the Mississippi Delta and the city of New Orleans, provides ample opportunities to connect with the roots of American music. Our international reach, combined with the strong ties to our local community, situate the Music Department at a cultural crossroads, where ideas and creative work intersect.

Music facilities at Millsaps include Steinway and Boston grand pianos in most practice rooms, two Steinway D concert grand pianos and a 41-rank Möeller pipe organ in the recital hall, and a tracker practice pipe organ, as well as a 9-station piano lab for class piano.
