Millsaps College Privacy Policy

This privacy policy describes how Millsaps College (“Millsaps.” “we,” “our” or “us”) collects or uses and shares the personal information of our students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors and users of this website, https://www.millsaps.edu/, and other websites that we may own, control or subscribe to.

We periodically update this privacy policy and reserve the right to change the provisions of this policy or our privacy practices at any time. If you are a Millsaps student, alumni, faculty member, staff member, or donor or receive emails from Millsaps, you will receive notice when this privacy policy is modified.  If not, we encourage you to review this site periodically, and we will alert you that changes have been made by updating the policy’s effective date. Your use of the websites constitutes consent to any changes in this policy as in effect on the date of such use.

Purpose

Millsaps College is committed to protecting your privacy. This privacy policy describes information collected from visitors to Millsaps’ websites and how that information is used.

Personal Information Defined

Personal information means information that specifically identifies an individual person, such as name, mailing address, email address, phone number or account number.  It may also include other information about you, such as gender, date of birth or other demographic information, or about your use of the websites, such as IP address or cookies, if that other information is linked to your personal information.

Your Rights to Access Your Personal Information

You have the right to access personal information about you that we have collected through our website by sending a request for access to [email protected]. You can also request that we correct any such information by sending an email to the same address. Current students should direct any request for access and/or changes to [email protected]. Prospective students should direct any request for access and/or changes to [email protected]. Faculty and employees should direct any request for access and/or changes to [email protected]. To verify that the request is authentic, we may require that such request be sent from the email address associated with your personal information. While we will comply reasonably and promptly with your request, we may need to retain some of your information for our own recordkeeping or to fulfill a legal obligation.

How Millsaps Collects Your Personal Information

We collect personal information that you provide to us. For example:

  • If you apply to be a student at Millsaps, we will require you to provide your name, email address, phone number, standardized test scores and other information.
  • If you apply to work for Millsaps, we may ask you to provide more detailed and sensitive personal information required for compliance with our hiring and equal opportunity policies and practices. 
  • Our Sites includes social media features, such as links to our Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, Threads and YouTube pages. Your interactions with these features are governed by the privacy policy of each social media platform.

We also collect some of your information automatically when you visit our websites and any software applications made available by us for use on or through computers and mobile devices. For example, our websites collect your IP address and other online identifiers and record the pages that you visit and other information about your activity on the websites.

Information Collected

Two main types of information are collected from visitors to Millsaps’ websites. The first is information that visitors voluntarily supply by various methods, such as submitting it into a form on a web page, or by uploading, mailing or emailing documents to the college or its agents. Other information is collected automatically by various networks and computer systems, including, but not limited to, the IP address, operating system and web browser used to connect to our systems, the link followed to get to our website and the time and day of the visit. Millsaps websites also use cookies to add persistence and improve the quality of the user experience.

Various Millsaps websites are hosted by the college and by third parties on the college’s behalf. Some of these sites may have their own privacy policies. Millsaps’ websites may also contain links to non-Millsaps websites. Millsaps has no control over and cannot be held responsible for data collected by other websites or how it is used.

How Millsaps Uses Personal Information

We may use your personal information:

  • To evaluate students’ applications;
  • To assess financial aid opportunities;
  • To support course registration;
  • To enroll individuals in educational, research, wellness and other programs;
  • To perform administrative tasks;
  • To support our educational mission;
  • To send information about other Millsaps offerings that may be of interest;
  • To process donations; and
  • For other similar uses.

We do not sell personal information to third parties. However, we may share your information with third parties and vendors under contract with us to perform the functions listed above. We may share your personal information with other third parties to:

  • Data concerning your race or ethnic origin or sexual orientation

How Millsaps Protects Personal Information

We employ reasonable security measures to protect against the loss, misuse and alteration of personal information under our control. We limit access to databases of personal information to specific personnel.  We require the use of usernames and passwords to access the data and maintain the information and the systems housing the information in a secure environment.

Data Retention

We keep your personal information for as long as needed to fulfill the particular purpose for which it is collected. We may also retain your records if legally required or to fulfill a legitimate interest.

Data Transfer from EU to US

If you provide personal information to us while located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you consent to the transfer of personal information to the United States and potentially to other countries outside of the EEA. You understand that the current laws of countries outside of the EEA may not provide the same level of protection as the data protection laws of the EEA. Nonetheless, we will take all reasonable steps to protect your privacy in accordance with the applicable data protection laws.

You are under no statutory or contractual obligation to provide any personal information to us.

Millsaps College uses common administrative, technical and physical controls to protect your information within the limits of our capabilities. These controls include firewalls, encryption, authentication systems, anti-virus software, technical and physical access control, technical and physical monitoring systems, employee background checks and security policy. While we do our best to maintain secure systems, we cannot guarantee the security of your information.
