Law schools prize the ability to think, critically analyze information and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and every major at Millsaps ensures you will develop these skills. Our pre-law advisor provides individualized guidance as well as help navigating the law school application process. Many law-related internships are available in Jackson, the seat of Mississippi state government, and give you an additional edge in your professional preparation. At Millsaps, "pre-law" isn't a major or concentration. It's a community dedicated to vocational discernment and professional growth.

Our distinctive strengths

From their first day at Millsaps, students have access to high-quality pre-law advising; throughout their college careers, students have numerous opportunities to determine whether law school is right for them. Through our Pre-Law Society, students interact with alumni in legal careers, attend workshops on the law school application process, and help each other prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Through Mock Trial, students develop their oral communication skills through simulated courtroom exercises; our Mock Trial team recently won Honorable Mention at the AMTA Regional Tournament in Jackson. Through opportunities for self-directed research, students demonstrate to law school admissions committees that they have the discipline and stamina for a fast-paced legal career. Indeed, as the flagship liberal arts college in Mississippi, Millsaps helps students develop the core competencies that law school demands: analytical reasoning, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and confidence in both oral and written communication. 95% of our 2022-2023 class were accepted to one or more law schools. Students had an average of 2.75 schools accepting their applications.
The Pre-Law Association hosts an annual law school forum, one of the largest in the Southeast, regularly attended by 15–20 law school recruiters from across the country.
Many pre-law students participate in the Millsaps Mock Trial Team, which has grown to be one of the largest programs in the Southeast. From its own historic mock trial courtroom on campus, the Mock Trial Team begins each season in August and competes through the spring semester. The team has won a bid to the opening rounds of the American Mock Trial Association national competition as well as numerous honors such as best attorney awards, best witness awards and top rankings in regional competitions.

Our curriculum emphasizes problem solving and critical thinking skills essential to any career (and therefore any Pathway), as well as scientific writing and experimentation skills that may be especially critical to students interested in any of our six Pathways tracks.
