Feeling sick? Need an allergy shot? Need health questions answered? Hope to see a physician? The Wesson Health Center provides basic health care on site to all Millsaps College students.
The Center is located on the first floor of the Campbell College Center, just inside the College Center’s south entrance. An experienced Registered Nurse coordinates services and care for 28 hours per week. The University of Mississippi Medical Center assigns its physicians to our center for approximately 10 hours per week. While regular office visits are free of charge, costs are applied to the few basic lab tests and immunizations performed in the center.
After-hours emergency care is not affiliated with the College, but is quickly made available at the Baptist Health Center (adjacent to the south border of campus), the University of Mississippi Medical Center (diagonally situated across an intersection from the northeast corner of campus), or St. Dominic’s Hospital (2 miles north of campus).
For information about insurance, please visit the student health insurance page. Please note the Wesson Health Center does not file claims on the student’s health insurance. The student will need to pay the fees and file a claim on their own medical insurance.
Missing Class for Medical Reasons?
If you are too ill to make it to class or have to miss class for a doctor’s appointment, then it is in your best interest to always let your professor know in advance, if possible. Even if you e-mail or call just before class or send word to your professor by a friend, it makes a good impression that you made the effort to notify him or her.
The Wesson Health Center staff will not provide a medical excuse for class when you are seen in the clinic, but they will provide written documentation as to when you were seen in the clinic. Whether an absence for medical reasons is treated differently from any other absence is determined by each individual professor.

Health Services does provide limited on-campus medical treatment to all Millsaps students free of charge. Our medical services are provided by the University of Mississippi Department of Family Medicine. Final year family medicine residents rotate through our center on a monthly basis during the academic year, and are supervised by departmental teaching staff.
After Hours Care
For basic medical treatment off campus, you may make an appointment with a doctor on your own. Our doctors on campus will usually refer students to the Lakeland Family Practice Center, which is run by the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s Department of Family Medicine. You will need an appointment to see a doctor. The Lakeland Family Practice Center is located at 878 Lakeland Drive, just a few blocks west of St. Dominic Hospital. The phone number is 601-984-6800.
Local Health Clinics
If students wish to see a doctor when our clinic is not open (for non-emergencies), they may visit one of the local walk-in clinics, such as:
Baptist Medical Clinics Family Health Center | 6250 Old Canton Road | 601.957.1015 |
Baptist Medical Clinics Family Health Center | 309-B Airport Road, Pearl | 601.939.1960 |
MEA Medical Clinics | 5606 Old Canton Road | 601.957.3333 |
University of Mississippi Family Medical Clinic | 878 Lakeland Drive | 601.984.6800 |
Mississippi Family Doctors | 187 Doctors Drive, Pearl | 601.939.8921 |
NOTE: Unless your medical insurance is with one of the large Mississippi managed care networks, expect to have to pay for your visit out of pocket and file your own medical insurance.
Emergencies
Should there be a medical emergency on campus which does not involve on-campus housing, but requires an ambulance:
- Call Campus Safety first at extension 1234.
- Tell them the nature of the emergency and where the patient is located.
- Allow Campus Safety to call 911 for an ambulance.
- Campus Safety will give them directions and escort them to the patient.
- Campus Safety will notify appropriate staff or involved people.
If a resident or visitor in a residence hall is involved and the situation is not critical, contact a resident assistant first (if one is close by or can be found quickly) and let them call Campus Safety to request an ambulance. If a resident assistant cannot be found quickly, call Campus Safety at extension 1234.
If an ambulance is not needed, someone close to the patient can transport him/her to an emergency room for treatment. Jackson area emergency rooms, closest to most distant, are:
University of Mississippi Medical Center | 2500 North State Street | 601.984.4000 |
Baptist Medical Center | 1225 North State Street | 601.968.1000 |
St. Dominic Hospital | 969 Lakeland Drive | 601.200.2000 |
Merit Health Central | 1850 Chadwick Drive | 601.376.1000 |
G.V. Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center (Veterans Only) | 1500 East Woodrow Wilson Drive | 601.364.1244 |
There are also emergency rooms outside the Jackson area at Merit Health Rankin and Merit Health Madison.
Psychiatric Emergencies
If you believe a student or visitor is in immediate danger of doing physical harm to himself/herself and is in a residence hall, find a resident assistant with whom you can discuss your concerns. Have someone stay with the person to provide support at least until Millsaps staff become involved directly and a plan is determined. Remember that getting someone the medical help he or she needs is worth having that person possibly upset that you betrayed a confidence. In case of an actual suicide attempt that does not appear to require an ambulance, there are two emergency rooms in hospitals with psychiatric units close by. They are:
University of Mississippi Medical Center | 2500 North State Street | 601.984.4000 |
St. Dominic Hospital | 969 Lakeland Drive | 601.200.2000 |
